In this fourth post of our “Foundation” series, we will highlight the work of ten remarkable individuals. These pioneers have each brought unique perspectives, ideas, and methods to the permaculture movement, leaving a lasting impact on the way we approach sustainable living.
As we celebrate the inspiring work of some key pioneers here, it's important to acknowledge that there are many more visionaries and practitioners who have made invaluable contributions to the field, and we cannot possibly capture them all in this post. We, however, encourage you to continue learning about the many other influential figures in the world of permaculture.
In case you missed the previous post in the series about the ethics of permaculture, you can read it here.
To start the “Foundation” series right from the beginning, the very first post is here.
Bill Mollison
Bill Mollison (1928 - 2016) was an Australian researcher, author, teacher, and environmentalist, widely known as the "Father of Permaculture". He co-founded the movement with David Holmgren, developing the permaculture concept as a response to growing environmental and social crises.
As a field biologist and ecological researcher, Mollison's experiences led him to appreciate the interconnectedness of natural systems, which later formed the foundation of permaculture. In 1978, he and Holmgren co-authored the groundbreaking book "Permaculture One", introducing the world to permaculture design principles.
Mollison established the Permaculture Design Certificate (PDC) course, which has trained thousands of permaculture practitioners worldwide. His dedication to promoting sustainable living practices earned him numerous awards, including the Right Livelihood Award in 1981.
Bill Mollison's legacy continues to inspire the permaculture movement, and his innovative ideas have left a lasting impact on individuals and communities around the world.
David Holmgren
David Holmgren, an Australian environmental designer, author, and teacher, is best known as the co-founder of the permaculture movement alongside Bill Mollison. Holmgren's passion for ecology and sustainable living led him to develop the principles of permaculture while still a student.
In 1978, he co-authored "Permaculture One" with Mollison, introducing the world to the concept of permaculture as a holistic approach to sustainable living. As an environmental designer, Holmgren has worked on numerous projects, demonstrating how permaculture principles can be applied to various contexts, from urban settings to rural landscapes.
He is the author of multiple influential books, such as "Permaculture: Principles and Pathways Beyond Sustainability" and "RetroSuburbia: The Downshifter's Guide to a Resilient Future".
David Holmgren's visionary ideas continue to shape the permaculture movement and inspire new generations of practitioners to adopt more sustainable ways of living.
Masanobu Fukuoka
Masanobu Fukuoka (1913 - 2008), a Japanese agricultural scientist, farmer, philosopher, and author, was a pioneering figure in the development of natural farming and influenced the permaculture movement with his revolutionary ideas.
Fukuoka's natural farming approach, also known as "Do-Nothing Farming", emphasized minimal human intervention, allowing nature to take its course. His methods included no-till farming, not using pesticides or fertilizers, and integrating plants and animals to create a self-sustaining ecosystem.
His seminal work, "The One-Straw Revolution", published in 1975, gained international acclaim and introduced his farming philosophy to a global audience, challenging conventional agricultural wisdom and inspiring many to adopt more sustainable and regenerative practices.
Masanobu Fukuoka's legacy continues to inspire permaculture practitioners and others seeking a more harmonious relationship with the natural world.
